ABC Radio rectifies fake stories about naming Mt Kosciuszko
Andrzej Kozek

On Sun 4 May 2025 at 10:00pm ABC Radio intervied Andrzej Kozek, the President of Kosciuszko Heritage Inc about the history of naming Mt KOsciuszko.

The interview started with an introduction by the host Suzanne Hill.

During our history quiz about mountains last week on the text line, a number of you made me aware of some controversy surrounding the naming of Australia’s highest peak. In fact, the theory many of you texted in about went like this, that when he named Mount Kosciuszko, Paul Edmund Strzelecki didn't realize there was another taller mountain nearby. And when it was later realized that Mount Townsend was taller than Mount Kosciuszko, to make things simple the authorities just swapped the name. So Strzelecki gave the name Kosciuszko to the wrong mountain. But it's OK because they swapped it around and the right mountain has the right name now. Now that's a very nice Aussie sounding story isn't it? Ah, we stuffed. No worries, let's just change names. It's actually all over the Internet, this idea, if you go looking for it. But did it really happen?

Is that indeed true that Strzelecki named a wrong mountaun and only with the help of Australian beaurocrats we now have name Mt Kosciuszko at the right mountain? Listen to the interview by clicking here
