What inspired your song ‘Kosciuszko’s Story’?
Initially, I saw the creation of the song as a stimulating challenge, as admittedly, I haven’t previously written about any historical figures. I realised quickly enough that in order to say something meaningful I would need to do some further research into Kosciuszko’s life since he is often portrayed through the prism of clichés and slogans and I was keen to find out more about him in order to feel a stronger sense of connection to the subject of the song. Ultimately, I was very drawn to the official theme of the competition, which was portraying Kosciuszko as a ‘friend of humanity’ – this approach resonates a lot more with me than any militaristic associations that are often discussed in the context of his person. While doing my research, I found out that I can relate to a lot of what Kosciuszko stood for, which includes his desire to liberate the underprivileged and enslaved people or his opposition to the involvement of organised religion in the state’s or ordinary people’s affairs. What is equally sad and fascinating though is that these issues are still relevant today in many places around the world. The present day relevance of Kosciuszko’s ideals made me want to write a song about him.
How was the song created?
It was composed on a guitar but since I’m not much of a guitar player, I asked a session player for help. Once I had the music recorded, it was time to record the vocals. An interesting technical fact is that the competition was nearing its deadline and I was away from recording studio facilities so I ended up recording my vocals into an iPad and that’s what can be heard in the final mix.
