Sebastian Sawicki - nagroda specjalna "Pulsu Polonii"
Laureat konkursu The Strzelecki Graphic Competition 2009

Born in the city of Gdansk in August of 1979, my very early years introduced me to martial law, political upheaval, solidarity and above all the fighting spirit of the Polish people. These early years formed a foundation for my character and an outlook on life, as well as for the respect for my Polish heritage.

Seeking a better life and more opportunity for their children, my parents uprooted their lives and moved to a foreign country thousands of miles away. The Polish emblem of a white eagle on a red background was replaced by a white kangaroo, also on a red background, which we saw on the tail of our plane as we flew out from Poland. Not realising it then, but that simple yet strong image, which was designed to visually symbolize our new homeland, Australia, which would also have an impact on my later years.

Growing up in Perth and Melbourne, I quickly adapted to my surroundings and took in all the diverse things that the Australian culture had to offer. English quickly became my first language and the Australian religion of Sport dominated my time as a youngster, yet my parents always made sure that the Polish culture was always running through my blood.

Developing a passion and ability for Visual Arts, I directed my time and attention to the strength and beauty of the visual medium. Wanting to pursue this passion in my life and career, I completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Graphic Design at Latrobe University. This would lead me to work on many visual branding projects, similar in nature to the strong graphic I saw on the tail of our plane when leaving Poland.

After working in numerous design studios in Melbourne, I followed my family to Perth where I have continued to work in the Visual medium, eventually becoming Creative Director of a boutique Design studio and enjoying the recognition of my peers.

My design work allows me to indulge my passion for the art of visual communication in a structured and commercial way, while my personal work allows me to express my thoughts, interpretations and outlook on life. That is why I was keen to be involved in the Strzelecki Graphic Competition as it allowed me to express my passion for the visual arts and my pride in my heritage, in a way that would link both countries that have shaped me as to who I am today.
